So, don’t wait; let’s discuss how we can help your furry friend improve their character.
Signs of Excessive Barking – How to Know If Your Dog Barks Too Much?
Excessive barking usually signals various underlying issues, such as attention-seeking, fear, aggression, defensiveness, possessiveness, and more. It’s crucial to understand the context behind this behaviour so we can adopt effective training measures.
Dogs may bark excessively in various scenarios, each with its own set of triggers and underlying causes.
Common Barking Triggers Include
- Unexpected noise – Many dogs instinctively bark at the sound of doorbells or the arrival of guests, acting as an alert system.
- Environmental stimuli – Specific sounds like thunder, fireworks, or construction noise can provoke a barking response.
- The sight of unfamiliar people or animals – Visual stimuli, such as people walking by the window or animals crossing their line of sight, often trigger barking.
- Insufficient exercise and mental stimulation – In the absence of companionship or adequate mental and physical stimulation, dogs may bark to express their discontent.
- Protective instinct – Dogs naturally protect their territory and loved ones, barking at perceived threats or intruders.
Root Causes of Excessive Barking
- Boredom and loneliness – Dogs lacking regular physical activity and mental challenges are prone to express their frustration and excess energy through barking.
- Anxiety disorders – Some dogs suffer from anxiety disorders, such as separation anxiety or generalised anxiety disorder, which can lead to excessive barking as a symptom of their distress.
- Socialisation deficits – Dogs that haven’t been adequately socialised may bark excessively out of fear or aggression towards unfamiliar people, animals, or situations due to their inability to appropriately interpret and react to social cues.
- Learned behaviour – Excessive barking can also stem from learned behaviour, where dogs have been inadvertently rewarded for barking in the past, reinforcing the behaviour as a way to gain attention or rewards.
- Hidden health issues – Excessive barking may be linked to underlying health problems, such as hearing loss, brain ageing in senior dogs, or conditions causing discomfort or pain, leading dogs to bark more than usual.
Taking time to monitor your dog’s behaviour can help you understand where the problems stem from and determine if your dog is exhibiting unusual behaviours. If any of the previously mentioned issues apply to your case, please don’t wait; contact our experts, and let’s discuss how we can help!

How Does Barking Training Work?
At Royvon, our barking dog training revolves around force-free, reward-based techniques that encourage quiet behaviour and provide dogs with alternative ways to express themselves.
Understanding that excessive barking is often a form of communication, our training focuses on identifying the underlying reasons behind the barking and addressing them directly.
We reinforce calm and silent behaviours by engaging in games and activities that result in prizes such as treats, praise, or play. This ensures that dogs associate quietness with positive outcomes and rewards.
This method helps significantly reduce unwanted barking and strengthens the bond between you and your dog, creating a harmonious living situation. By implementing these force-free techniques with precise timing and consistency, we guide your dog towards more appropriate forms of communication, fostering a tranquil and happy household.
We were experiencing difficulties when walking both dogs on the lead and both had become protective, reactive and nervous of other people and sometimes dogs, making our walks difficult and stressful.
Well what can I say, the improvement we have seen in both dogs is brilliant, they are more confident and focused now and their reactivity levels have dropped significantly. We have some additional 1:1 training sessions to complete over the next few weeks to ensure that we can keep up the training.
During the training programme, Romeo and Kelsey sent us video updates of the dog’s progress, enabling us to see how they were getting on and responding to the training. This was invaluable to us.
In addition, the team at Royvon took really good care of both dogs and we received reports on how they were settling in/getting on during their group playtime and time spent in kennels, plus daily photo updates.
I wouldn’t hesitate to board our dogs at Royvon again, we were very happy with the dogs care.
Thank you to Romeo, Kelsey and the rest of the team at Royvon!
Maslow went for 3 weeks residential and spent a lot of his time with Charlie who is fantastic. She sent regular updates including videos and pictures which we could go through in preparation for getting him home. We had updates daily from the report team to let me know that his report was ready. He had a great time.
I cannot recommend Charlie and the team enough. Definitely worth the money and he has come home ready to carry on with the training and is listening to me and eager to learn. If you're having issues with your dog then give the team at Royvon a call, it's made my life a lot easier already.
Molly's trainer during her stay was Charlie who was brilliant. She was able to quickly build up a strong relationship with her and it was easy to see that Molly felt really comfortable. Charlie sent photos and videos from each training session which helped me to track her progress and are great to refer back to now that Molly is back home. Charlie quickly identified Molly's strong herding instinct and was able to direct this positively into various "games" which are great outlet.
Throughout her stay, I also received daily photos from the care team taken during her group play sessions as well as enrichment reports. She was initially only socialised with one older, calmer collie to build up her confidence before being introduced to a larger group. It was great to see her confidence grow.
Molly is much more focused on walks and confident around other dogs and cars. Thank you to Charlie and the team at Royvon!
We needn’t have worried…she had the life of Reilly with the professionals.
The team at Royvon are extremely professional and facilities there are first class. Everything was organised in advance and the hand over seamless. We booked a larger room, play and walks…it was well worth doing so. The updates we received daily showed us just how much fun Pip was having and reassured us that this was the right decision.
I cannot thank the team enough for looking after Pip and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Royvon Esher. I am more than happy to book Pip in again…money well spent - my last review I said if I could give 6 ⭐️ I would; a small amendment it’s now a firm 7 out of 5 😁.
I would not hesitate to recommend that you leave your beloved pet with Royvon, they can certainly be trusted
Thank you so much to everyone at Royvon Esher for making Lucas’ holiday so happy. He will definitely be coming back to you when he needs to.
We were provided daily updates through videos and pictures, and I truly didn’t realise beforehand how great it would be to receive these. Seeing Mabel so happy and truly bonding with the staff was amazing to see and is also a great tool for us to refer to and learn from. We also loved seeing how close Mabel became with Tilly and we really want to thank her for being so patient and caring to Mabel.
Mabel has grown in confidence, and we now feel better equipped to support her in her ongoing training.
Thank you again to Charlie, Tilly and the Whole Royvon team! x
Romeo looked after Rocky and sent regular updates of training and play sessions. It was lovely to see him more confident and enjoying his time.
It's great we now have a place where Rocky is comfortable to stay. Thank you Romeo and the Royvon team!

BarkingTraining for Every Breed
Royvon’s training methodologies are tailored to any. While we understand that barking is a common habit amongst all dogs, certain breeds might be more inclined towards vocalisation.
Acknowledging this, we tailor our training strategies to align with the breed’s unique needs and tendencies. By adapting our techniques, we address the root causes of barking, ensuring a calm, well-behaved companion, irrespective of breed. Some well-known ‘barkers’ are:
- Beagles often bark while following scent trails or when they sense loneliness.
- German Shepherds bark to alert their owners of strangers or unusual activities.
- Miniature Schnauzers use barking to alert their owners and express territorial behaviour.
- West Highland White Terriers bark out of excitement or when seeking attention.
- Yorkshire Terriers barking often stems from protective instincts or anxiety.
- Fox Terriers tend to bark in response to perceived threats or during play.
- Chihuahuas bark due to fear, protectiveness, or when seeking attention.
- Jack Russell Terriers bark from boredom, excess energy, or when hunting/playing.
- Pomeranians bark for attention when alerting their owners or out of boredom.
- Siberian Huskies often bark or howl because of loneliness or the desire for companionship.
Understanding breed-specific tendencies helps tailor anxiety training effectively. Contact us if you have any trouble with your dog barking!
Benefits of Barking Dog Training
- Reduced noise at home: Training minimises frequent or loud barking, ensuring a quieter, more serene home atmosphere.
- Improved communication: Our training strengthens the connection between dogs and owners by better understanding and responding to the dog’s needs and triggers.
- Increased confidence: Builds a dog’s sense of security, reducing barking from anxiety or fear.
- Better social behaviour: Guides dogs on proper interaction methods with visitors and other pets, promoting polite greetings and encounters.
- Enhanced quality of life: It creates a more joyful and tranquil existence for dogs and their families, elevating overall happiness.
Avoid barking by starting early
Starting training early is key to preventing excessive barking habits from forming. Early socialisation plays a crucial role in this process, exposing puppies to various sounds, sights, and experiences. This exposure helps them become well-adjusted adults less likely to bark excessively out of fear or anxiety.
Positive reinforcement training for puppies encourages quiet behaviour by rewarding them when calm and quiet in potentially bark-inducing situations. Implementing these strategies from puppyhood ensures your dog grows into a well-behaved, silent companion, making your lives together more peaceful and enjoyable.
