Our Training For Border Collies Really Works

Border Collies are popular pets for a variety of reasons! They are known for their versatility, mental brilliance, working ability and desire to please their owner. Many people buy them because they would like to have a smart dog and a quick learner. They’re energetic, loyal and obedient. Owners range from the experienced, to new owners attracted by the breed’s capabilities.

However, with the amazing assets of Border Collies comes a great psychological vulnerability and sensitivity. Owners must learn how to handle it in order to create a great relationship with their dog. Owning a Border Collie can sometimes be a challenge, and they’re unfortunately earning the reputation of being ‘problem dogs’. But, if you have a problem pup, or you’re thinking about getting a Border Collie and are worried, there’s no need to fear! Owners who want to understand their dog, and are eager to work through the difficulties, will soon reach harmony! This is a unique breed, hypersensitive and super intelligent, but you need to start the training early if possible, and know to avoid the mistakes in raising them. Training For Border Collies: The Problem

All Border Collies have working instincts, but there can be a big difference in the intensity of these instincts, even between pups from the same litter. This diversity can be confusing for some owners that have owned them before. They may expect them to be similar to Border Collies they’ve had in the past. Furthermore, a lack of experience with the breed and their natural working needs can cause misunderstanding. If they’re not correctly socialised, they can become aggressive. And, a lack of physical and mental stimulation can cause obsessive behaviours.

As they’re a popular dog, other owners often step in to give advice. They may forget that Border Collies can be very different, and what worked for them doesn’t work for everyone! This can lead to confusion over what approach to take. Owners may also feel that others are being critical of their seeming inability to control such a smart dog. Thus, they may feel embarrassed even when owners are trying their best! Training for Border Collies is a process. All dogs will be at different stages at different times.

At Royvon, we know that all dog owners want the best for their dogs. People who are facing problems with their Border Collie’s behaviour would love to learn how to gain the trust and confidence in their dogs, how to understand them better, and not to be frustrated with the uncontrollable behaviour! You want your dog to be happy, confident and to shine to its potential. That’s where our residential training for Border Collies can help.

One of our case studies is Red, who was reactive to people, dogs, cars, bikes and anything that moved! His parents wanted him to feel more at ease in the world, and that’s where we helped. Red has completed his 21 days training and now is working with his mum and dad for a further three months. Watch the video below to see how well he’s getting on!

Why Royvon?

Royvon has over 60 years of experience in training and helping dogs with behavioural problems. We understand the owners’ feelings and guide them through the training process. Border Collies in particular have always been of great interest to our trainer Anna. As an owner of two herself, she’s been fascinated by the great talents and sensitivities of these dogs. She’s constantly involved in researching about the breed, participating in different seminars and webinars from specialists, breeders, and award-winning handlers.

Also, she has passed the herding evaluation test with both of her dogs. They are show champions in different countries, and involved in dog dancing activity! And, Anna is interested in training for Border Collies. She loves helping to teach people how to fulfil their dogs’ needs and express their instincts in a controllable way. All of this helps owners create a great bond with their dogs, and understand them better.

Furthermore, Royvon was a pioneer of the residential training method back in the 1980s. Then, it was still considered a somewhat strange option! However, in recent years, it has become more mainstream. Many dog owners have realised the huge benefits it can have! As market leaders in this sector, we have chosen to open more facilities and employ more trainers at a reasonable cost, so that more owners just like you can access our services.

We worked with Fred, a very obsessive Border Collie. His mum and dad wanted to be able to let him off the lead at the park without negative behaviours such as reacting to other dog’s toys and jumping up. Our trainer Romeo trained Fred using classic conditioning to follow the directions of the human for awesome rewards. We channelled his obsessive natural behaviour and focus to aid the training rather than be the problem. Watch the video below to see the great results Fred achieved working with us, and follow-up owner training with his parents!

The Training Plan

At Royvon, we’re dedicated to offering you a training plan for Border Collies that is unique to your dog, and really works! We offer different training services, considering you and your dog’s needs and circumstances. For most dogs, we recommend our Residential Training Programme. This consists of two phases- training your Border Collie at our facility with our talented trainers, and then training with the owner.

We’ll work with you to set your training goals, by assessing your Border Collie’s behaviour and what improvements can be made. Then, the first week of your dog’s stay is all about bonding with the trainer and building the foundations of good behaviour. This breed are quick learners. But, if they’ve got into the habit of ‘bad’ behaviours, they need some time to realise that the ‘good’ behaviours are more rewarding! Gaining the trust of your dog is vital for the training process.

As we progress through the residential training for Border Collies programme, we’ll give them more distractions. And, we’ll get deeper into the root of their behaviours, working with their triggers. It’s all about your dog, their past training experiences, and overall confidence. We will gradually move through the plan as your dog becomes more ‘ready’ and happy to go to the next level.

After that is the second phase: owner training! We’ll work with you, either face to face or through online sessions. We’ll help you to learn the skills you need to understand your dog and communicate better, leading to the best possible results. This is an essential part of any dog’s training. You need to understand how to work together for long-lasting results and a happy relationship with your dog!
