Puppy training tips: the critical early weeks

The most critical window in a puppy's life runs from around four to sixteen weeks, this is when the most rapid learning happens, and when experiences have the greatest lasting impact on future social behaviour. Puppies are naturally curious and playful during this stage, which makes it the ideal time to start teaching commands and shaping good habits, building a relaxed, confident dog who feels safe in their surroundings.

Balancing socialisation with vaccination timing

Most vets recommend limiting a puppy's exposure to unknown dogs and high-risk outdoor areas until their vaccination course finishes, typically around ten to twelve weeks, but the critical socialisation window doesn't pause to wait for that. Carrying your puppy outside, letting them watch the world from a secure bag or your arms, having visitors come to them at home, and controlled introductions to fully vaccinated, healthy adult dogs all let socialisation continue safely in the meantime.

Residential puppy training

Our residential puppy programme, available at our Surrey and Merthyr Tydfil venues, gives each puppy daily training and activity sessions alongside enriching walks that support socialisation, habituation and getting comfortable with real-world distractions. Throughout the stay, puppies learn calm house behaviour, no jumping up, no furniture, no mouthing, alongside basic obedience skills. Owners receive a puppy pack (including a DVD and command structure) at collection, plus an hour-long lesson on site to learn the training principles needed to continue the work at home. If you're not sure this is the right option for your puppy, a shorter consultation session is a good starting point, we'll assess your puppy's age, breed and temperament and give an honest recommendation rather than assuming residential is always the answer.

Puppy classes

Open to puppies aged eleven to twenty-four weeks, these classes go beyond standard obedience, they're designed to teach you how to be your puppy's trainer, covering the life skills your puppy needs rather than just commands. Socialisation is a major focus: playing politely with people and other puppies, recall, and walking nicely on the lead. Training is reward-based throughout, so it's worth not feeding your puppy immediately before a session.
