Why it works
Progress that would take months at home, achieved in weeks.
Training in the valleys of South Wales gives your dog something that living rooms and local parks simply can't: controlled, varied real-world environments that build reliability fast.
๐ฏ
Everything your dog needs, in one place
Our 5-acre Merthyr site gives trainers room to work across different areas indoor, outdoor, urban edges and woodland in a single session.
๐
Same calm hands, every single day
Daily repetition with the same experienced handler accelerates learning in a way weekly classes cannot. Your dog builds trust, then skills.
๐ฒ
The South Wales environment as a training tool
From the play paddocks to the surrounding countryside, our trainers use varied terrain deliberately building focus that holds in the real world.

What we help with
Whatever you're dealing with right now
We've worked with every kind of challenge at Merthyr since 1959. There is almost always a clear way forward. Residential Training at our South Wales centre starts from ยฃ85 per day. The final price will depend on the time of year, the programme recommended for your dog and any additional activity or enrichment services you choose.
๐
Poor recall
Can't trust them off-lead? We fix this comprehensively not just in quiet spaces, but everywhere that matters to you.
๐ฆฎ
Pulling on the lead
Walks that feel like battles. We teach calm, engaged walking in real environments the town, the trails, the paths near your home.
โ ๏ธ
Reactivity
Lunging, barking at other dogs or people. We address the emotional root not just the behaviour on the surface.
๐
Anxiety & nervousness
An anxious dog needs a calm, structured setting to begin building confidence. That's exactly what Merthyr provides.
๐ด
Aggression
We work with aggression cases honestly always with safety first, never with false promises.
๐งฉ
Lack of focus
A dog that can't switch off or engage makes training feel impossible. We build focus deliberately, from the ground up.

When your dog comes home
This is where most training programmes fall apart. Not ours.
The handover at Merthyr is where we invest as much care as the training itself. Because the real measure of success is what happens at home weeks and months later.
๐
Full handover at collection
We walk you through everything your dog has learned โ commands, cues, what to continue and what to avoid. You leave knowing what to do.
๐ค
Ongoing owner support
Up to three months of follow-up sessions. Questions answered, progress maintained, issues caught early.
๐
Progress continues, not fades
With the right tools and the right support, what your dog learned at Merthyr becomes permanent, not temporary.
โIn many cases, a completely different dog comes home. And the difference for owners is immediate.โ

FAQs
Questions about Merthyr residential training
What Merthyr owners usually ask before getting in touch.
How long does residential training at Merthyr take?
โบ
Most programmes run for two to three weeks. The exact duration depends on your dog's individual needs, which we discuss during the assessment. The follow-up support period continues for up to three months after your dog returns home.
Can I visit during the stay?
โบ
We welcome owner visits at agreed points during the programme. We'll discuss the right timing based on your dog's progress โ some dogs settle faster without early visits, and we'll always advise honestly.
What environments will my dog train in?
โบ
At Merthyr we use our 5-acre site, the surrounding valley countryside, local walking routes and varied terrain. The goal is a dog that performs reliably everywhere โ not just in the training paddock.
My dog is reactive can you still help?
โบ
In most cases, yes. We work with reactive dogs regularly at Merthyr and have done for decades. We'll assess carefully and tell you honestly whether residential training is the right approach for your dog's specific history.
Do you use force-free methods?
โบ
Always. Our training is built on positive reinforcement, clear communication and building genuine trust. We never use force or fear. A dog that wants to work with you will always outperform one that is trained through pressure.
How far is Merthyr Tydfil from South Wales towns?
โบ
Merthyr is central to the South Wales valleys โ easily accessible from Cardiff (25 mins), Pontypridd, Aberdare, Tredegar, Abergavenny, Brecon and the surrounding area. We welcome dogs from across Wales and the South West.
