What to expect from a 1-2-1 training session

Whether you have a young Labrador puppy or an elderly Collie, training remains a valuable part of a dog's life throughout, mental and physical exercise helps prevent anxiety and stress-related behaviours like destructive chewing, inappropriate barking, reactivity and aggression from developing in the first place. Sessions run at both our Wales and Surrey sites, or we can work with you closer to home depending on what you're working on.

How a session works

The trainer allocated to your dog meets with you first to talk through your dog's history and what's actually going on, not just the headline behaviour but what tends to trigger it and what you've already tried. From there, they'll set a realistic goal for the session itself rather than promising to fix everything at once. You work alongside your trainer throughout so you can see exactly what's happening and why a particular technique is being used, and they'll talk you through what to continue at home afterward, with a clear idea of what progress should look like before your next visit.

What we can help with

Anything from muzzle training and loose-lead walking to puppy obedience and confidence-building for rescue dogs, even a longstanding new behaviour in an elderly dog is something we can work through together. Do you need to commit to a set number of sessions?

Not at all, come for one session or a hundred, as often or as little as suits you. More sessions generally mean better results, but the choice is entirely yours, some owners just need a single session to get unstuck on one specific problem.

What should you bring?

High-value treats, chicken or cheese work well for most dogs, whatever genuinely motivates yours. Most sessions take place outdoors, since training around real distractions tends to be far more effective, so suitable clothing and footwear are worth bringing too. If your dog already has a muzzle, bringing it along is useful even if muzzle training isn't the main focus, since it lets the trainer see how your dog currently responds to it.

Will you try to sell me a residential package?

No, we're here to help you and your dog, nothing else. If a residential stay truly would suit your dog better, your trainer will say so, but plenty of behaviour work is entirely achievable through 1-2-1 sessions alone.
