Akita training: our top tips

Akitas are a powerful, independent breed historically used to hunt wild boar, deer and bears, which explains why they're so capable of holding their own in almost any situation. That independence means they thrive with an owner who's confident, consistent and structured in how they train, rather than someone hoping the dog will simply fall in line on its own.

Socialisation matters enormously

Akitas tend to prefer being an only dog, or at most living with another Akita, and can show aggression toward unfamiliar dogs, particularly of the same sex, if they haven't been properly socialised early. Early, consistent exposure to other dogs and animals from puppyhood makes a real difference to how they cope with this later in life. They're often aloof with strangers but deeply affectionate and protective with family, and are sometimes used as therapy dogs with the elderly and children once well socialised.

A versatile, driven breed

Akitas compete successfully in Schutzhund, tracking trials and agility, and benefit enormously from having a "job", tossing and catching treats, tug of war, or structured training sessions all give their intelligence somewhere to go. Left without enough mental stimulation, Akitas can develop whining, chewing or destructive habits, and they don't tend to cope well with being left alone for long periods, bonding strongly with one particular person in the household.

Building a good working relationship

Rather than dominance-based handling, what actually works with this breed is consistency and clear, positive structure, the same expectations applied every time, reinforced with rewards your Akita genuinely values. This builds the kind of mutual trust that keeps a strong-willed breed like this settled and responsive, rather than testing boundaries. They can also be truly standoffish with unfamiliar people, so plenty of calm, positive introductions to new faces while young helps considerably if you want a dog you can comfortably take out and about. Regular grooming is worth planning for too, Akitas shed heavily and are a really high-maintenance breed to keep on top of around the house.

A real Royvon case study

Blu, an American Akita, came to us for our residential Behaviour Modification Programme showing aggression toward other dogs. Our trainer Ross worked with him over a three-week stay, both on-site and off-site, teaching him to approach other dogs calmly instead of rushing and charging them, and taught Blu's owners the same positive methods during his departure lesson so they could continue the work at home.
