Clicker training is a positive reinforcement technique that uses a distinct clicking sound to mark the exact moment your dog performs the behaviour you want, paired with a reward straight after. The sound itself becomes a clear, consistent marker, making the whole process faster and more enjoyable for your dog to learn from, part of our wider cognitive enrichment approach.

How to get started

First, teach your dog what the click means: click, then immediately give a tasty treat, repeated until the association is solid, this often happens faster than owners expect. Once established, click the exact moment your dog completes the behaviour you're after, followed by the reward. Luring versus shaping

There are two broad ways to get to the behaviour you're clicking for. Luring guides your dog into position with a treat, useful for teaching something new quickly, while shaping rewards small steps your dog offers on their own, moving gradually closer to the finished behaviour without ever physically guiding them there. Shaping takes longer and asks more of your dog mentally, since they're doing the problem-solving rather than just following a treat, but it tends to produce a more reliably understood behaviour once it clicks, quite literally.

Why the timing matters

A clicker lets you mark a desired behaviour instantly, increasing the chance your dog links that specific action with something good happening. Once the association is well established, you can move to intermittent reinforcement, rewarding some clicks but not every one, which actually strengthens the response over time rather than weakening it, the same principle behind our guide on food rewards in puppy training.

Is clicker training better than other methods?

There's genuine debate here. We use clickers because they make training more enjoyable for both dog and trainer, but a 2021 study on clicker efficiency found no significant difference between reinforcement methods overall, neither a clicker nor a marker word is objectively "better", they simply serve slightly different purposes. A whistle, by comparison, is used for cues and commands rather than marking a specific moment, so many trainers use both a clicker and a whistle alongside each other.
