Rewarding good behaviour is one of the most valuable things you can do as a puppy owner. Food is the reward puppies respond to most reliably. Keep treats small and frequent, structure rewards into three tiers: low-level rewards using daily kibble, mid-level rewards using palatable dry treats, and high-level rewards using favourite foods like cheese or chicken. Match reward level to the moment - use low-level rewards for affirming learned behaviours, high-value rewards when teaching something new, and mid-level rewards for well-executed previously trained behaviours. Food supports your praise and body language but is never a substitute for genuine enthusiasm.
