The Border Collie is a working breed in the Kennel Club's Pastoral Group, bred to herd sheep and also used in search and rescue, scent detection and a wide range of canine jobs. Border Collies need real physical and mental exercise: interactive play, reward-based training, outdoor activity and a canine sport. Border Collies are highly sensitive with sharp observation skills, making them excellent at reading subtle cues but prone to becoming reactive. Early socialisation and desensitisation to everyday stimuli is particularly important. Ten key things that make the biggest difference include: interactive play and tug, early socialisation, involving your dog in a canine sport, long-line walks, fast recall, impulse control games, a quiet crate, puzzle toys, staying calm during reactions, and keeping your Collie lean and fit. Border Collies originated in the hilly country between England and Scotland, bred to herd sheep for farmers. Royvon offers training for Border Collies of all ages in Esher, Rugby and Merthyr Tydfil.
