Best dog-friendly parks and walking spots in Esher
Esher offers open spaces, historic gardens and a genuinely dog-friendly community, whether you've lived here for years or are visiting Surrey. A change of environment gives dogs real sensory enrichment, new scents, textures and terrain, so it's worth exploring properly with your dog.
Esher Common
Esher Common spans over 200 acres across five connected commons, with woodland paths, open meadows for off-lead running, and Black Pond, a favourite for dogs who enjoy a splash. It gets busy at weekends with families and dog walkers, which suits sociable dogs happy to meet others, and there's free parking around the edges.
Claremont Landscape Garden
This National Trust property, designed by Capability Brown and over 300 years old, welcomes dogs on leads from October to March, giving you lovely winter walks through the amphitheatre and lake areas. There's an entrance fee, which supports the upkeep of the space.
Bushy Park
A short drive from Esher, Bushy Park covers over 1,000 acres and is home to red and fallow deer, dogs must stay on leads from May to July during breeding season. The Woodland Gardens are particularly lovely when the azaleas and rhododendrons flower in spring.
Hampton Court Palace Gardens
Dogs are welcome in the West Front gardens (though not the palace itself), with a pleasant riverside walk along the Thames that connects to other local routes.
Local footpaths
The footpath network connects Esher Common through to Oxshott Heath, or towards Thames Ditton along tree-lined paths, with routes of varying length depending on how energetic your dog is feeling.
Dog-friendly cafes and pubs
The Wheatsheaf on Esher Green is a 200-year-old community pub with two sun-facing terraces where dogs are welcome, staff bring out water bowls and treats, and it's a popular meeting spot after a walk on the common. The Bear offers a more upmarket setting, welcoming dogs in its bar area and outdoor seating, with staff who know regulars and their dogs by name. The Victoria in nearby Oxshott is a Michelin-mentioned gastropub that welcomes dogs in its bar and outdoor spaces, worth booking ahead for weekend meals. CaffΓΒ¨ Nero on the High Street welcomes well-behaved dogs inside, useful when the weather turns, and several independent cafes along the High Street offer outdoor seating for dogs too.
Essential pet services
Dukes Dog Salon at Imber Court Sports Club, Ember Lane, East Molesey, just a few minutes from Esher, is run by Julie and Ian. Julie holds an OCN Level 3 diploma in professional dog grooming plus Health and Safety and Canine First Aid training, and the salon is fully qualified in hand stripping for wire-haired breeds, with one-to-one sessions of 1.5 to 2 hours that are never rushed, particularly helpful for nervous or older dogs. Surrey Dog Feeds, just outside Esher, is a family-run business specialising in natural dog food and treats, including raw and working dog ranges, with a knowledgeable team happy to discuss dietary needs, and dogs are welcome in store. The Partridge Practices run independent veterinary surgeries in Claygate and East Molesey serving the Esher area, offering comprehensive care and out-of-hours emergency arrangements, worth contacting directly to understand their protocols and saving their details in your phone.

Getting there and around
Regular trains run from London Waterloo to Esher in around 30 minutes, which makes the area popular with owners who work in London but want more space for their dog. Claremont opens to dogs specifically in the quieter winter months, while Esher Common and the wider footpath network are dog-friendly year-round.
Common questions
Esher Common allows dogs off-lead in most areas, particularly the open meadows and woodland, though always check seasonal signage. Bushy Park requires leads during deer breeding season from May to July. Claremont Landscape Garden only admits dogs from October to March. For emergency veterinary care, The Partridge Practices in Claygate and East Molesey offer out-of-hours arrangements, worth confirming and saving in advance.
