Lead Lunging: Teaching Focus Around Distractions

Many dogs walk nicely when nothing is competing for their attention, but the moment a distraction appears, another dog, a jogger, a cat, they lunge toward it, sometimes hard enough to pull their owner off balance. This is a different problem to general pulling: it's specifically about what happens when focus breaks under distraction.

The Look cue

Teaching a dog to check in with you, rather than fixate on a distraction, is the most reliable fix. Start somewhere free of distractions, such as home. Hold a tasty treat near your dog's nose, then move it in a straight line up to a point between your eyes, saying "Look" as you do. Your dog's gaze follows the treat to your face, hold it there for a few seconds before rewarding.

Building the habit gradually

Some dogs manage only a second or two of eye contact at first. That's fine, build the duration gradually with repeated short sessions, rewarding every success. Once your dog reliably holds focus for several seconds indoors, practise the same cue somewhere with mild distractions before attempting a genuinely busy environment.

Using it in the real world

The goal is to spot a distraction before your dog fully fixates on it, and cue "Look" early enough that you get their attention back before lunging starts. This takes practice and timing on your part as much as your dog's, but it's a effective way to keep walks calm and enjoyable for you both.
