As more breeds are added to banned lists, press coverage of attacks and stories of poor breeding or fighting-line dogs have fed a belief that some dogs are simply born a certain way, beyond the reach of training or love. What actually goes wrong with this breed

XL Bullies respond to training exactly like any other breed; they genuinely enjoy the playful side of it and the attention that comes with doing what's asked. A young XL Bully's biggest challenge is usually boisterous energy combined with size and reputation, while adult Bullies more often present with fear-based anxiety that's developed into reactivity.

Why we avoid "balanced" training methods

Some trainers offer so-called "balanced" training, which, despite the name, relies on punishing incorrect behaviour, choke collars, electric aids and similar tools. We regularly meet strong dogs trained this way who comply only out of fear of punishment, while the underlying fear and anxiety driving their original behaviour actually worsen, not improve.

Royvon's history with this exact problem

Royvon was founded in 1959 by the parents of Darren James, our current owner and managing director, who originally bred and boarded German Shepherds. Darren grew up watching too many "unfixable" dogs being put to sleep and began training guests himself, starting with basic obedience and building into deeper behavioural work, which grew into the residential training service that remains our signature offering today: three weeks of full immersion training with a dedicated trainer, followed by owner training to build a lasting, trusted bond at home.
