Boarding For Anxious Dogs Starts With A Confidence Stay.
Finding suitable boarding for a nervous or reactive dog can feel difficult. You need to know that the people caring for your dog will listen, take their concerns seriously and adapt the stay around what they can cope with. Royvon's Confidence Stay is a two-day, one-night introduction to our team, accommodation and routine. It gives your dog time to experience Royvon before you commit to a longer stay, while giving us the opportunity to understand what helps them feel comfortable.

โWould 100% recommend Royvon Merthyr to anyone, and especially to those with anxious dogs as they have specialist boarding for them.โ

Why a Confidence Stay
A first stay with a clear purpose.
Anxiety can show itself in different ways. Your dog may find new places difficult, worry around unfamiliar people, struggle when separated from you or react when they feel overwhelmed. A busy boarding environment that works well for one dog may be too much for another.
The Confidence Stay gives us time to learn about your dog without beginning with a full holiday booking. Over two days and one night, our team can see how they respond to the new environment, which activities suit them and where they may need more support.
Some dogs are ready for a longer boarding stay afterwards. Others benefit from another Confidence Stay, a more gradual plan or training first. We will talk you through what we have observed and recommend a sensible next step.

Visiting in person
Questions worth asking when you meet the team.
Visit in person and talk to the staff directly, before you commit to anything.
Do they understand what an anxious dog really needs? Predictable routine, choice, quality rest, and the company of familiar people.
What does a typical daily routine and enrichment activity look like?
Could your dog have access to sniffing and exploring rather than just a kennel run?
Can you bring familiar bedding or belongings from home?
The itinerary
What your dog's Confidence Stay includes.
๐ค
A detailed handover
At drop-off, a member of the team will take time to listen to what you know about your dog. You can explain their routine, triggers, preferences and the things that help them settle. Your dog will also have time to take in their new surroundings.
๐พ
Play chosen for the individual dog
Your dog will have either a group or solo play session. Their carer will decide which is most appropriate based on their needs, confidence and behaviour during the stay.
๐ณ
A nature enrichment walk
Sniffing and exploring can be a low intensity way to help a dog decompress. A nature enrichment walk gives your dog the chance to investigate their surroundings and use some energy without relying on high pressure activity.
๐ด
A comfortable place to rest
Rest is an important part of the day, particularly for a dog adjusting to unfamiliar surroundings. Your dog will have their own boarding space and the support of our care team throughout their stay.
๐
A late night comfort walk
Before bed, your dog will have a late night walk and the opportunity to toilet.
๐
Updates and an honest assessment
After the first day, you will receive a report explaining how your dog has settled, what they have done and whether the team has identified any concerns. When you collect your dog the following day, you will receive a further report and can discuss the most suitable next step with the team.
Getting ready
Before your dog arrives.
You will be able to give us the information we need about your dog's medical requirements, feeding and usual routine before the stay. Vaccination records must be up to date.
You can also register comfort toys or blankets that you plan to bring. Familiar belongings can help some anxious dogs, although you may prefer to leave treasured or irreplaceable items at home. Our team can explain what Royvon provides and help you decide what to pack.

Our approach
Care shaped around your dog.
There is no single formula for helping an anxious dog settle. Our carers look at the dog in front of them and adjust the experience accordingly.
๐ง
Calm handling
We use force-free methods and do not use pain or fear to suppress unwanted behaviour. If your dog is struggling, that is useful information which helps us decide how to support them and whether the plan needs to change.
๐ฏ
Suitable activity
Some dogs enjoy carefully managed social activity; others need individual play and more space. The choice between group and solo activity is based on what is most beneficial for your dog.
๐ฟ
Enrichment as part of the stay
Sniffing, exploring and appropriate play give dogs useful outlets during their time with us. Activity is balanced with opportunities to rest.
๐ฅ
Experienced support
Our care team looks after dogs around the clock, and our trainers have experience working with anxious and reactive behaviour. If training may help before a longer stay, we can discuss the available options with you.
After the stay
What happens after the Confidence Stay?
The aim is to make progress, not to rush your dog into a longer booking. At collection, we will explain how your dog responded and talk through the options.
Depending on the individual dog, we may recommend:
Moving on to a longer boarding stay
Booking another Confidence Stay
Building up the time away from you more gradually
Completing some training before trying a longer stay
There is no fixed limit to the number of Confidence Stays your dog can have before moving to another service. If you are travelling from further away, ask the team about nearby accommodation and whether a gradual plan can be arranged over several visits.
A genuine Confidence Stay experience
โ โ โ โ โ
My Romanian rescue dog, Rufus, spent 2 days and a night at Royvon in Esher for a confidence stay to get him used to the place and the staff. Rufus is an anxious dog and can be reactive to people he does not know. I was very pleased with the professionalism and care that Royvon provided during Rufus's stay.

Choosing the right provider
What to look for when choosing boarding for an anxious dog.
A good boarding provider should be willing to discuss your dog's behaviour openly before accepting a booking. Ask how the team would respond if your dog resisted handling, avoided staff or became overwhelmed.
It is also worth asking:
Whether activities can be adapted for dogs who are not comfortable in a group
How much opportunity dogs have to sniff, explore and rest
What experience the team has with anxious and reactive behaviour
How and when owners receive updates
What happens if a dog does not settle
Whether familiar bedding or comfort items can be brought from home
The answer should be specific to your dog, rather than a promise that the same routine works for everyone.

FAQs
Frequently asked questions
Is boarding possible for an anxious or reactive dog?
โบ
It can be, but suitability depends on the individual dog. A Confidence Stay allows your dog to experience Royvon for two days and one night before you decide whether a longer booking is appropriate. Some dogs settle well on their first visit; others need more preparation or a different plan.
What if my dog struggles during the stay?
โบ
The team will record how your dog responds, any areas of concern and the action taken. We will discuss this with you honestly and recommend what to do next. This might be another short stay, a more gradual introduction or training before a longer booking.
Will my dog have to mix with other dogs?
โบ
Not necessarily. The stay includes either a group or solo play session, chosen by the carer according to what is most beneficial for your dog.
Will I receive an update?
โบ
Yes. You will receive a report after the first day, followed by a further report and a chance to ask questions when you collect your dog the next day.
Can I bring familiar bedding or toys?
โบ
Comfort toys and blankets can be registered before arrival. Familiar items may help some dogs settle, although it is sensible to leave treasured or irreplaceable belongings at home. Ask the team what is suitable to bring.
What information do you need before the stay?
โบ
We will need details of your dog's medical and feeding requirements, along with up to date vaccination records. You should also tell us about their routine, triggers, handling needs and anything that usually helps them feel comfortable.
What happens after the Confidence Stay?
โบ
You will receive recommendations based on what the team has observed and what you ultimately want for your dog. The next step may be normal boarding, another Confidence Stay, a gradual programme of visits or training first.
Is the Confidence Stay a training programme?
โบ
No. Its main purpose is to introduce your dog to Royvon and help us assess how they cope with the environment. Royvon also offers residential and non-residential training if additional behavioural support is recommended.
