When it comes to finding the right training option for your dog, it’s important to get it right. After all, proper training is vital if you and your dog want to live a harmonious life together! However, finding the right option for you and your family is not always easy. There are so many different training methods and providers out there. How can you ensure that you are making the right choice? Perhaps you have a brand new puppy and you’re looking for their first training sessions. Or, maybe you have an adult dog with some behavioural issues. You could even have already started training, but you’re worried that things are going wrong and you’re looking for an alternative. We’ve been a family run business for over 60 years. In that time, we’ve trained countless numbers of dogs of all breeds, ages, and training requirements. We were pioneers in the residential training space (where dogs stay with us for an extended training period), but we also offer plenty of non residential options. No matter which option you choose, our main focus is always on using positive training methods to get the best results and a happy, well-rounded dog. What is it?
Your dog will stay with us, in our well-equipped accommodation, usually for a period of three continuous weeks. During this time, we will work with them on an intensive training programme that is completely tailored to their needs. We’ll also make sure that they get plenty of love and cuddles as they would at home! Once the three weeks are complete, you will come to collect your dog, and that’s when the owner training starts. We’ll work with you to learn everything you need to know about working with your newly-trained dog. As we’ll be teaching you these skills on your then fully trained dog, most owners find this to be a lot easier and therefore very rewarding and successful!
What else do you need to know?
Before your residential training starts, we will set an agreement with you. This agreement essentially means that we will set goals and, between us, deliver on them over the next twelve weeks. The agreement includes owners committing to up to twelve weeks of owner training in order to learn the necessary skills to have a harmonious life with their dog. The amount of owner training required usually depends on the age of the dog. With an older dog, the owner would probably need to attend most of the 12 weeks of sessions. But, an owner with an eight month old puppy may only require three or four. But, this is completely up to the individual situation! Whatever happens, we will support these owners every step of the way.
Who is residential dog training best for?
This is usually the preferred option for all sorts of situations. Many owners find that life simply gets in the way of dog training, and they never really get around to it. Residential training removes this option, as we will train your dog for you. While it is important to commit time to owner training, most owners find this easier to do once their dog has the necessary skills.
So, this option is great for those owners who have a busy lifestyle, but still want to ensure that their dog receives the best training possible. It’s also ideal for dogs with more severe behavioural issues, such as anxiety and aggression, that many owners struggle dealing with. In fact, residential training suits most lifestyles and dogs, so it is the preferred option for more of our customers!
Is non residential training best for me?

What is it?
We have a range of non residential training programmes to suit all sorts of needs. These include:

- Our Come Everytime Recall Programme to help train your dog to have a reliable recall
- Confidence, Socialisation & Life Skills to help older puppies feel more confident in different environments
- Our Adolescent Obedience Programme to bring out the very best in your adolescent dog
These sessions do not involve your dog staying with us for their training. Essentially, our non residential options aim to teach owners the skills they need so that they can train their untrained dog themselves.
What else do you need to know?
We work with each dog owner to provide the best non residential training programme for them. We always do the best we can to motivate you to do the best job that you can! As a part of this, we will teach you the skills you need to get some ‘quick wins’ to help you continue on your dog training journey. In essence, we teach owners the importance of not giving their dogs rewards for free, and teach them how to be ‘rewards on steroids’. We know that dog training is hard, but we try to make it enjoyable and as easy as possible here at Royvon.
Who is non residential training best for?
It’s important for owners who choose this option to fully understand the task at hand. This means that you need to be prepared to show up each week. This will be for in person training sessions and often online theory learning which is included in some programmes. So, non residential training tends to be best for those who have more time to dedicate to their dog training journey. It’s also suited to those who want to be completely involved at every step of the way. Instead of training your dog then teaching you how to work with them, we teach you how to train your dog. If you don’t want your dog to stay with us for residential training, and you’re happy to commit to their training yourself, this option would work well for you.
I’m still unsure which dog training option is best for me- what can I do?
Of course, choosing the right training option takes a lot of thought and consideration! To help you make the decision, we offer an introduction to our training methods in the way of a two-hour session with one of our best trainers. During this session, we’ll teach you about the fundamentals of training: focus, rewards, removal of all rewards, reinforcement of wanted behaviours, and not reinforcing behaviours you want less of. It can also include an overnight stay if you wish. Many of our customers start on a non residential programme and then choose to move on to the residential option.
